British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has declared plans to elevate defence spending to 2.5 percent of the country’s annual Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2030, citing the heightened global tensions reminiscent of the Cold War era.
Standing alongside NATO leader Jens Stoltenberg, Sunak unveiled the United Kingdom’s intention to allocate an additional $93 billion over six years to bolster the production of munitions and drones. This move is set to position the UK as the second-largest defence spender within NATO.
“In a world that is the most dangerous it has been since the end of the Cold War, we cannot be complacent,” he said. “As our adversaries align, we must do more to defend our country, our interests, and our values.”
Sunak emphasized the imperative for deeper munitions stockpiles and enhanced replenishment capabilities, citing the ongoing conflict in Ukraine as a pivotal lesson.
