In a harrowing incident in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo), two women accused of witchcraft were subjected to a brutal public execution, with locals stoning them to death before burning their bodies.
The gruesome act took place in the village of Nyamutiri in South Kivu, sparking outrage and condemnation from various quarters.
According to Andre Byaduniya, the head of a local civil society organization, the victims, aged 60 and 65, were apprehended late on Sunday following allegations of witchcraft and their purported involvement in the deaths of several individuals.
Timothee Bakanirwa, an official from an adjoining region in DR Congo, lamented the failure of law enforcement authorities to intervene and prevent the horrific act.
He expressed deep regret over the inability of the police and army to intervene in time to save the lives of the accused women.
