Senegal’s newly elected President, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, has unveiled a “breakaway” government, introducing a cadre of fresh faces to key positions following his resounding victory in last month’s elections.
At 44 years old, Faye, a political newcomer who has never held elected office before, clinched a landslide win in the first round of voting, promising sweeping reforms and emerging as the country’s youngest president.
In a move signaling collaboration, Faye is expected to share governance responsibilities with his appointed prime minister and former mentor, Ousmane Sonko, who played a pivotal role in Faye’s ascension to power.
On Friday, Sonko, aged 49, introduced a cabinet comprising 25 ministers, characterizing it as a departure from past practices.
