The Senate has taken a decisive step in addressing the issue of the falling Naira and the overall economic downturn by summoning President Bola Tinubu’s economic team. This move follows the previous summoning of the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Dr. Olayemi Cardoso, on the same matter.
Initially, the upper chamber had scheduled Dr. Cardoso to appear before it on Tuesday. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, including the governor’s engagement at the House of Representatives, the summon had to be postponed.
The Nations gathered The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Banks, Insurance, and Other Financial Institutions, Senator Adetokunbo Abiru, explained that the meeting couldn’t proceed as planned after waiting for an hour for Dr. Cardoso.
Abiru said: “So that is how come this (meeting) has been somehow delayed and the sense is that perhaps they are just rounding up and we don’t know exactly when they will be done, to be frank.
“On our part too, we also believe that we should be rational and in terms of trying to see reasons, we put our brothers in the House of Reps and the sisters in the House of Reps and of course the CBN Governor.”
“To that extent, it will appear that on our part, we’ll have to adjourn until Friday the 9th of February.”
Consequently, the Senate decided to vary its summon, extending the invitation not only to the CBN governor but also to President Tinubu’s economic team. The revised meeting is now scheduled for Friday at 9.00 am.
