Russian President Vladimir Putin has issued a stark warning to NATO, suggesting that a direct conflict between Russia and the alliance could escalate into World War III.
Putin’s comments come in the wake of his claimed landslide victory in Russia’s presidential election, securing 87.8 percent of the votes.
He said, “It is clear to everyone that this will be one step away from a full-scale World War Three. I think hardly anyone is interested in this.”
He added that Russia was technically ready for nuclear war. He said if the United States sent troops to Ukraine, it would be seen as a significant escalation of the conflict.
While Putin celebrates his electoral triumph, international scrutiny mounts over the fairness of the election process. The United States, Germany, the UK, and other nations have criticized the election, citing the imprisonment of political opponents and censorship.
In his post-election briefing, Putin addressed the looming specter of conflict, cautioning against the catastrophic consequences of a confrontation between Russia and NATO.
