As the Federal Government (FG) announces plans to release 102,000 metric tons of assorted grains to tackle the ongoing food crisis, opposition parties, including the Labour Party (LP) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), are calling for transparency in the distribution process.
As reported by Punch, the announcement made by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Idris Mohammed, last Thursday, outlined the release of maize, millet, garri, and rice from the National Strategic Grain Reserve, in collaboration with the Rice Millers Association of Nigeria.
However, skepticism surrounds the promises of the Federal Government, with both the LP and the PDP expressing doubts about the government’s ability to fulfill its commitments. Yunusa Tanko, spokesperson for the Labour Party Campaign Organisation, criticized the government’s track record of unfulfilled promises, citing previous instances where pledges were not met.
Echoing similar sentiments, Abdullahi Ibrahim, Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, emphasized the urgency of addressing the food crisis, expressing concern over the government’s approach. Ibrahim urged the FG to ensure sincerity in its efforts and transparency in the distribution of grains to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians.
