NUT laments non-implementation of World Teachers Day promises

The Nigeria Union of Teachers has complained about the non-implementation of 2020 World Teachers Day promises made to the union by the Federal Government.

Secretary-General, Dr Mike Ike-Ene in an interview with The PUNCH alleged that the former President Mohammadu Buhari-led administration made some mouth-watering promises for basic education without fulfilling them.

Recall that during the programme, Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, reeled out these promises including approval of a special salary scale for basic and secondary school teachers in Nigeria, an increment of the retirement age of the teachers from 60 to 65, and the number of service years from 35 to 40 to mention afew.

“One big problem the Ministry of Education has in Nigeria is having too many people who are taking decisions at the same time, and at the end of the day, nothing is achieved.  The former administration brought out a lot of bonanzas but none came to fruition. We are pleading with the new government to look into all these” he said.
