The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) announced the suspension of its two-day nationwide protest on Tuesday night following the achievement of its key objectives on the first day of demonstrations.
In a communique issued at the conclusion of its National Executive Council meeting, the NLC declared the decision to suspend street actions for the second day, citing overwhelming success in attaining the protest’s primary goals.
While the street actions were suspended for the second day, the NLC announced that nationwide activities would continue with simultaneous press conferences across all states of the federation, reaffirming and extending the ultimatum issued to the Federal Government.
“You have to understand it. This protest is about hunger. What of those who are not working? The minimum wage, when will it be completed? When will it be implemented? What will be the minimum wage that will remove hunger?” Ajaero queried.
As reported by the Guardian, the extended ultimatum, set to expire on March 13, 2024, urges the government to implement all agreements reached on October 2, 2023, and address additional demands outlined in the NLC’s letter presented during the nationwide protest.
In the event of non-compliance by the government upon the expiration of the 14-day ultimatum, the NLC reserves the right to convene and decide on further courses of action to address the grievances of Nigerian workers and citizens.
“To reaffirm and extend the 7-day ultimatum by another 7 days which now expires on the 13th day of March 2024 within which the Government is expected to implement all the earlier agreement of the 2nd day of October 2023 and other demands presented in our letter during today’s nationwide protest.”
“To meet and decide on further lines of action if on the expiration of the 14 days Government refuses to comply with the demands as contained in the ultimatum.”
