The recent allocation of fifteen billion naira for the construction of a residence for the Vice-President in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has ignited a wave of discontent and controversy, with the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, leading the charge against what he deems a “shocking and disheartening” expenditure, particularly in light of the pressing challenges facing the nation.
Obi raised objections to the allocation, questioning the priorities of the government and emphasizing that the significant sum could have been directed towards addressing critical issues such as infrastructure, education, security, and healthcare – all of which are essential for the well-being of Nigerian citizens.
The controversy has not gone unnoticed by the public, as Nigerians from various walks of life have weighed in on the matter.
In an interview with RoyalTimes, Alfa Saheed, a trader, expressed his dismay, stating that the allocated funds could have been better utilized to benefit the citizens in crucial sectors that require urgent attention.
Similarly, Pastor Amedo, a clergyman, condemned the government’s decision, labeling it a wasteful use of resources. He highlighted the challenges Nigerians are facing in the current economic climate, emphasizing the need for prudent spending and resource allocation.
An anonymous resident questioned the government’s priorities, suggesting that the substantial fund should be diverted to providing palliatives for the citizens struggling in the current economic conditions.
“The less privileged are suffering. The government should allocate resources in order to make things easier for the people. They should provide employment opportunities for workers, reduce the price of petroleum and provide for the needs of the people. What is the essence of the resources the government have when the less privileged are suffering?
In defense of the allocation, the Minister of the FCT, Nysom Wike, released a statement clarifying that the funds were designated for the construction of a “befitting residence” for the Vice-President.
