The Federal and Lagos State Governments over the weekend have pledged concerted action to evict traders and illegal occupants under Lagos bridges. Both governments declared zero tolerance to abuse of bridges and hinged on the need to save lives and protect the infrastructure. Minister of Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola and officials of Lagos State Government briefed journalists on their position after inspecting Apongbon and Eko bridges in Lagos. Fashola said efforts to quickly complete initial emergency rehabilitation on Eko Bridge were slowed down when Apongbon Bridge was affected by fire in March. He said construction materials imported for completion of Eko Bridge were deployed to begin urgent repairs on Apongbon. The minister said that efforts to complete Apongbon before Christmas had also been frustrated by another fire that affected the Ijora Olopa section of Eko Bridge on November 4. He said the government would not be able to actualise its plan of completing Apongbon Bridge because its materials had been deployed to the burnt section of Eko Bridge. He joined the contractor on the project to give technical details of how casings and other components were being used for rehabilitation on both bridges.

In commemoration of World Diabetes Day, the Endocrinology and Metabolism Society of Nigeria has warned that over Ten million Nigerians are living with the disease and the numbers are expected to double by 2030, if nothing is done urgently.

The Society also decried a situation where there are only 150 endocrinologists in a population of more than 220 million to manage the condition, adding that diabetes is a major cause of blindness, kidney failure, heart attacks, stroke and lower limb amputation.

The President of Endocrinology and Metabolism Society of Nigeria and Consultant Endocrinologist/Physician at Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Professor Olufemi Fasanmade, said diabetes remains the commonest cause of lower limb amputation and chronic kidney disease.

He further stated that western lifestyle, smoking and drinking are risk factors fueling the increase in the number of diabetic cases in the country.
