The Nigerian Army has officially confirmed the tragic loss of two officers and four soldiers during an ambush by terrorists in Niger state. The incident occurred on April 19, as troops from the 1 Division of the Nigerian Army were conducting a fighting patrol to Karaga Village in Shiroro Local Government Area.
“Troops of 1 Division Nigerian army deployed at Allawa and Erena, while on a fighting patrol to Karaga village in Shiroro local government area of Niger State had an encounter in an ambush staged by terrorists on 19 April 2024”.
Army spokesperson, Maj.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, announced the casualties on Sunday, April 21, stating that the troops bravely engaged the terrorists, resulting in the elimination of several assailants and the capture of some of their equipment. However, six personnel, including two officers and four soldiers, succumbed to the attack.
Maj. Gen. Landers Saraso, the General Officer Commanding 1 Division and Commander Operation Whirl Punch, expressed condolences to the families of the fallen heroes and assured them that the setback would be avenged by the troops.
Report has it that he confirmed that, efforts were underway to track down the surviving terrorists who fled after the encounter.
Nwachukwu stated that the army had followed its customs and traditions by contacting the Next of Kin of the deceased personnel and conducting burials for the fallen soldiers.
