The Nigerian Bar Association has submitted the names of nine lawyers to the Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, as nominees for appointment to the Supreme Court bench.
The list of NBA nominees comprised six Senior Advocates of Nigeria and three other lawyers.
The nominees are a former President of the NBA, Dr. Olisa Agbakoba, SAN, (Anambra), former Attorney General of Abia State, Chief Awa Kalu (SAN) (Abia); Yunus Ustas Usman (SAN) (Kogi); Anthony Idigbe, (SAN) (Delta), Babatunde Fagbohunlu, (SAN) (Ondo) and Miannayaaja Essien, (SAN) (Rivers).
Others are, Awalu Hamish Yadudu, (Kano), Tajudeen Oladoja, (Kwara) and Ayuba Giwa, (Edo).
The nine nominated lawyers were called to the Nigerian Bar between 1978 and 1988.
A total of 89 candidates were said to have submitted Expression of Interest Forms to the NBA.
The NBA had published on its website after its visit to the Acting CJN on January 18, “The CJN welcomed lawyers to the bench.
“Most successful lawyers had in the past turned down judiciary appointments.
“Those who want to come to the bench should be driven by service and passion for judicial duties.”
It is expected that the Acting CJN will further send a shortlist of the nominees to the Federal Judicial Service, which will subject them to the appointment procedures.
After concluding its process, the FJSC will send a further shortlist to the National Judicial Council to conclude the appointment procedure by sending the successful candidates to the President.
