Kwara State Government is to upwardly review student Indigenes bursary award from Five Thousand naira to Ten Thousand naira
State Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Doctor Afees Abolore- Alabi confirmed this while featuring on the Thirty Fourth Edition of Media Parliament organized by Kwara State Council of Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ held at the Press Centre, Ilorin.
Doctor Abolore- Alabi hinted that the beneficiaries of the bursary increment cut across students Indigenes in state, federal and private higher institutions nationwide.
He explained further that the Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq led government would soon open portal for registration for the students to fast-track onward implementation of new bursary increment.
According to him: “When they source their revenue from the government, government on its part is just trying to assist them by way of subvention to augment their salary payment, but most of the activities that you see on campuses today are as a result of un-revenue drive as institution. but I can say this afternoon that most our institutions exist almost on their own, they have various means of going about their revenue generation”
Earlier, Chairman, Kwara State Council of Nigeria Union of Journalists NUJ, Comrade Abdul-lateef Ahmed advocated realistic funding window model for state tertiary institutions to guarantee smooth academic calendar.
He said: “they will not place needed financial burden on both student and parent in a bit to gradually relief state tertiary education funding, the state government code institute and endowment fund is with the primary intention of serving as a funding window whenever the need arises without any attempt to preempt”
Comrade Ahmed also frowned over poor products being turned out by tertiary institutions in the Country and called for total overhauling of education sector to grow the nation.
