Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, narrowly escaped a potential tragedy on Saturday evening when suspected Boko Haram fighters ambushed his security convoy along the Jakana-Mainok expressway in Borno State.
Governor Buni, who remained in Maiduguri for an additional official engagement, was not present during the ambush but the attack resulted in the reported death of one policeman and injuries to six others.
The security team, according to report, had accompanied the governor to the University of Maiduguri’s 24th Convocation ceremony, but returned to Yobe without the governor.
Unaware of the governor’s absence, the attackers targeted the convoy but fortunately, the security personnel accompanying the official vehicles engaged in a firefight with the terrorists, managing to repel the ambush.
The governor’s spokesperson, Mamman Mohammed, while confirming the attack said three policemen sustained injuries, but they are responding well to treatment.
“They fired some shots, but the security escorting the governor’s official vehicles back to Damaturu exchanged fire with them, but three policemen sustained injuries,” he disclosed.
