The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu has called for an inter-ministerial collaboration to address illegal migration and human trafficking.
Edu made the call during a courtesy visit to the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in Abuja, saying the call became urgent to tackle insecurity, illegal migration and human trafficking which she says are the root causes of poverty and humanitarian crises.
Edu also assured the interior minister that the National Social Register would be expanded to capture families and widows of ex-servicemen in the paramilitary organisation, before adding that the synergy would enable her ministry to get the required intelligence to coordinate and effectively administer any humanitarian crisis.
Meanwhile, the Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, revealed that the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has cleared fifty-five thousand out of the two hundred thousand international passports awaiting issuance to applicants.
Tunji-Ojo reassured that it would take new applicants only two weeks to receive the travel document, once the remaining passport backlogs have been cleared.
