Bassirou Diomaye Faye, Senegal’s fifth president, has been sworn into office at a ceremony in the capital, Dakar, promising to faithfully fulfil the office of president of the Republic.
The 44-year-old Mr Faye won the delayed elections in March, securing fifty-four percent of the vote, ahead of his main challenger Amadou Ba.
On Friday, the country’s Constitutional Council confirmed Mr Faye as the winner.
Heads of state from around the continent attended the inauguration ceremony, including Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu, who is also chair of the regional bloc, Ecowas.
He also declared “to observe as well as to conscientiously abide by the provisions of the Constitution and the laws, to devote all my power to defending the constitutional institutions, the integrity of the territory, national independence and to spare no effort to achieve African unity.”
