China has issued a stern warning to the United States over the proposed ban on TikTok, cautioning that such actions could have repercussions for the US in the future.
The warning comes in response to the approval of a bill by the US House of Representatives that could lead to the suspension of the popular social media app.
The bill, titled the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, passed through the House on Wednesday and is now set to be reviewed by the Senate. If passed into law, the bill would require the Chinese parent company of TikTok to sell its US operations.
Ahead of the House vote, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin criticized the US for targeting TikTok without presenting evidence of any security threats.
He described the move as “bullying behavior” that disrupts normal business activities and undermines confidence in the international investment environment.
Wang warned that such actions could eventually backfire on the United States itself, highlighting potential consequences for the normal international economic and trade order.
