As the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) leadership in Kwara State formally submitted a comprehensive list of demands to the state government on Wednesday, social analyst, Comrade Hussien Omotosho has expressed reservations regarding the consistency of the union’s position.
The labor unions have underscored critical requests, including the implementation of the ₦35,000 wage award across all worker categories in the state, consequential adjustments for pensioners, and specific allowances for media workers. Additionally, they have emphasized the importance of implementing 100% CONHESS and hazard allowances for health workers at the local government level.
However, Omotosho highlighted what he perceives as discrepancies within the NLC’s stance. “If you look at the words of the NLC in Kwara State, there are inconsistencies,” he pointed out, drawing attention to the divergent messages emerging from the leadership.
Raising a pertinent question about representation, Omotosho directed attention to the NLC Chairman’s seat, questioning whose interests and mandates the position truly represents. He referenced a previous occasion where discussions about the ₦35,000 wage award were ongoing, and the NLC Chairman seemingly suggested that the state governor should follow the steps of President Tinubu.
“Now it is left for the relationship between each labor union in their various states to know how to manage their wages,” Omotosho remarked, indicating a shift in the narrative from a centralized directive to a more localized approach, leaving the decision-making power to individual state labor unions.
