The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has successfully negotiated with European clubs to release Super Eagles players for the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), starting on January 1, 2024.
Head coach Jose Peseiro has submitted a provisional 40-man list to the Confederation of African Football (CAF), which is expected to be trimmed down to 27 players by January 3, 2024.
European clubs in the past have hesitated to release players promptly due to the AFCON’s scheduling clash with their league commitments; however, the NFF’s proactive negotiations have averted potential conflicts, ensuring timely player releases for the tournament.
The Super Eagles will kick off their preparations in Abu Dhabi, engaging in a three-nation tournament against Burkina Faso and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Coach Peseiro’s squad will then commence their AFCON 2023 campaign against Equatorial Guinea on January 14.
