The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in the Bauchi zone has emphasized its preference for providing grants to students rather than loans, asserting that grants would better facilitate students’ ability to finance their education.
Associate Professor Lazarus Maigoro, the Bauchi zonal coordinator of ASUU, reiterated this stance on Saturday, highlighting the union’s commitment to gathering data on students at risk of dropping out at the end of the current academic session.
RoyalTimes gathered that he raised critical questions regarding the feasibility of student loans, asking who will pay the loan and what is the fate of those who cannot access it.
Maigoro expressed concerns about the potential negative impact on student’s academic performance and psychological well-being if burdened with loans during their studies.
According to him, this was with the hope of making the government review its decision on the issue of the loans and replace it with grants.
He said, “The question is: Who will pay the loan? What is the fate of those who cannot access it?”
“The psychological trauma the students will be subjected to due to the loan while still in their studies will affect their performances negatively.”
“The thought that they would graduate with a loan of N4 million and above without the capacity to pay back is another psychological torture on them.”
