World Malaria Day is an international observance commemorated every year to recognize global efforts to control malaria.
The aim of World Malaria Day is to raise awareness of the devastating impact of malaria and to mobilize resources and support for malaria control and prevention programs in endemic countries.
Speaking with RoyalTimes correspondent Adetoro Oyenuga on the essence of the Special Day, a Public health physician Olanleso Osadiaye stated that Nigeria is the fourth country contributing to about fifty percent of the cases of malaria in the African region.
While speaking on factors that caused malaria, Osadiaye reiterated that one of the major factors that cause malaria among others is the environment.
“Nigeria is one of the four countries contributing to about fifty percent of the cases of malaria in the Africa region and definitely we can say one of major of the causes is environmental factors, number one our enivironment is not the cleanliest, we need to do a lot in terms of that to make that we clear up all the breedin places because malaria is a disease that has been with us for a while and we are yet to find a solution, so if we are able to clean up our enivironment; clean up our gutters, let water pass very smoothlyand easily thenwe have less breeding place for malaria”
She admonishes citizens to avoid self medication and get proper testing before taking malaria medications.
