The federal government has issued a warning to Ghana and Togo to stop attacking Nigerians in the countries. Chairman of the Nigerian Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, made this known while addressing journalists after a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the presidential villa in Abuja on Sunday.
She said the warning became necessary following the recent attacks on Nigerians residing there. Dabiri-Erewa called on the foreign countries to protect Nigerians the same way the lives of their nationals are being safeguarded in Nigeria.
Dabiri-Erewa said the Togolese ambassador has been contacted on the issues of attacks on Nigerians in the country. She however appealed to Nigerians to be good ambassadors wherever they find themselves.
Meanwhile, the Federal Government plans to hold a series of stakeholders meetings with the Nigerian communities in the Diaspora as part of efforts to address rising tensions between Nigerians and Nigerian embassies and missions in some countries.
The meetings are also to identify the challenges faced by the Diaspora Nigerians and find urgent solutions to them. This is coming after a 32-year-old Nigerian, Jeffrey Ewohime, destroyed Nigerian High Commission vehicles in London last week.
Dabiri-Erewa also disclosed plans by the federal government to have hotlines for Nigerians in diaspora so that they can contact the commission to notify it of any challenges they are facing.
