The President of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Mr Ayuba Wabba, says the new minimum wage recently signed by President Muhammadu Buhari, is binding on all employers of labour in the country.
Speaking during an interview on Friday, Wabba stated that only employers whose workers are less than 25 can be exempted from the monthly thirty thousand naira salary payment. The labour leader said penalty would be slammed on employers who fail to pay the minimum wage, in accordance with the law.
According to him, what is expected now is for the Salaries and Wages Commission to issue a guideline and circular on how various employers of labour can key into the implementation. The NLC boss, however, decried the varying salary structure of the public and civil service, calling for a guide to uniform the system.
Mr Wabba said the minimum wage should be reviewed for increment on a 5-year basis owing to inflation and other issues.
He also called for an increase in the payment of pensions and gratuity to retired Nigerian workers. Wabba noted that nobody can live on the five thousand naira monthly pension being paid by the government.
