Another meeting between the federal government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, ended on Monday night without an immediate resolution to the ongoing strike. At least six other meetings have been held between both parties before Monday’s since the strike commenced on the fourth of November.
While addressing journalists at the end of yesterday’s meeting which held at the Federal Ministry of Labor headquarters, the national president of ASUU, Biodun Ogunyemi, said the meeting ended with grey areas to be resolved.
He said that the Federal Government must show a strong commitment to funding and revitalisation of universities before the strike would be suspended.
On his part, the minister of labour and employment, Chris Ngige, was hopeful that the union would suspend the strike soon. According to him, the government has demonstrated commitment by way of disbursing money through the Tertiary Education Trust (TET) fund to revitalise public universities.
When asked if the union asked the government to commit N50 billion naira to revitalization of public universities, Mr Ngige said the aggregate amount involved is beyond N50 billion. Ngige said most of the issues have been resolved but ASUU will need to consult its members and come with what they think. He said the meeting will reconvene at the instance of the union.
