The Federal Government has said that it is working hard to come out with a policy that would limit the number of children that a mother could have in Nigeria. It stated that traditional rulers and other leaders across the country are being engaged as regards this, adding that the move is aimed at addressing one of the “great challenges” in the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan of the Federal Government.
The Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed disclosed this while responding to questions during a session at the 24th Nigerian Economic Summit in Abuja on Tuesday. She noted that the country’s population has been identified as one of the great challenges confronting the successful implementation of the ERGP.
Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo also said while addressing the summit on Monday, that research has shown that Nigeria can cut childbirth by fifty percent, by simply educating the girl child. The professor of law says the government is working on a three-pronged approach to get Nigeria’s millions of out-of-school children back to school.
According to projections by the United Nations, Nigeria’s population will exceed three hundred million by 2050.
