The Biden administration has escalated tensions with China’s leading chipmaker, targeting its most advanced factory following revelations that it supplied chips for Huawei’s Mate 60 Pro phone.
Reports indicate that the Commerce Department has suspended permission for US suppliers to sell to Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC)’s most advanced plant, known as SMIC South.
This move halts millions of dollars worth of shipments, including chipmaking materials and parts from companies like Entegris.
While the Massachusetts-based company maintains it complied with export licenses, it ceased shipments upon receiving letters from the Commerce Department.
Republican Congressman Michael McCaul criticized the Commerce Department, stating that its actions were negligent and raised doubts about its ability to safeguard national security.
