Ukraine has announced it has shot down a Russian Tu-22M3 strategic bomber.
This marks the first time such an action has been taken by Ukraine, targeting a warplane capable of launching long-range missile attacks on Ukrainian cities.
Meanwhile, the Russian defence ministry reported the bomber’s crash in the southern Stavropol region, attributing it to a technical malfunction during its return to base after a combat mission.
Ukrainian Air Force Commander Mykola Oleshchuk, however, confirmed the destruction of the warplane, highlighting the joint efforts of anti-aircraft missile units and Defence Intelligence.
“For the first time, antiaircraft missile units of the air force, in cooperation with the defence intelligence of Ukraine, destroyed a Tu-22M3 long-range strategic bomber,” Ukraine’s military said.
