In a bold statement, South Africa’s foreign minister declared on Wednesday that all nations have a moral duty to cease funding and supporting Israel’s military operations in Gaza.
Citing the recent ruling by the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which ordered Israel to prevent potential genocide and improve the humanitarian conditions in Gaza, the foreign minister emphasized the urgency of halting financial backing for such actions.
While the ICJ fell short of demanding an immediate ceasefire, South Africa, a longstanding advocate for the Palestinian cause, continues to draw parallels between the struggles of Palestinians and Black South Africans during apartheid.
Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor also disclosed her recent meeting with the International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor to discuss joint referrals regarding the Palestinian territories.
She highlighted the need for global accountability, questioning the ICC’s ability to issue arrest warrants and emphasizing the obligation for states to discontinue funding Israel’s military endeavors in light of the ICJ’s findings.
