Professor Kolawole Wahab, a distinguished figure in the field of Neurology, in a bid to address the pressing issue of stroke in Nigeria, delivered a compelling charge to public health practitioners.
The call to action took place today at the induction ceremony of public health students at Al-Hikmah University.
During his keynote address, titled “Dwarfing the Giant: The Role of Public Health Practitioners in Reducing the Burden of Stroke in Nigeria,” Professor Wahab emphasized the need for public health professionals to deploy their specialized skills in the battle against stroke.
Highlighting the global significance of stroke as a leading cause of death and disability, Professor Wahab urged public health practitioners to leverage their unique training to achieve the commendable goal of diminishing the impact of stroke.
“With the unique training received by public health practitioners, they can harness their skills to dwarf the masquerading stroke giant,” Professor Wahab asserted.
The distinguished professor stressed the importance of effective communication in informing and educating the public about the risk factors and prevention of stroke.
He underscored the potential for improvement and innovation in public health functions through continuous evaluation, research, and a commitment to continuous quality improvement.
“Increasing awareness and knowledge about the risk factors of stroke is crucial. By enhancing public education, we empower individuals to make informed lifestyle choices that can contribute to stroke prevention,” Professor Wahab stated.
He further emphasized the role of ongoing research and evaluation in refining public health strategies, ensuring that interventions are evidence-based and adapted to the evolving landscape of health challenges.
