Imran Khan, the jailed former Prime Minister of Pakistan, has entered a plea of not guilty to charges of leaking state secrets.
The charges revolve around an alleged disclosure of a classified cable, known as a cypher, sent to Islamabad by Pakistan’s ambassador in Washington last year.
Government prosecutor Shah Khawar revealed on Wednesday that the charges were formally presented in the courtroom, and both Imran Khan and his co-accused, former Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, denied the allegations.
The indictment poses a significant setback to Khan’s aspirations of participating in Pakistan’s upcoming general election in February.
