Convert Student Loan To Grant For Poor Students, ASUU Urges Tinubu

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has asked President Bola Tinubu to change the newly assented Students Loans Act to grant for indigent students.

It could be recalled that president Tinubu signed into law the Students Loans Bill in fulfillment of a promise he made during his campaign. Reacting after the president signed the bill, Dele Alake, spokesperson for President Bola Tinubu said the loan will provide succor for students in higher institutions.

Speaking on national TV over the weekend, the president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, professor Emmanuel Osodeke said the loan is impracticable and not sustainable.

According to him, there are more than one million students in Nigerian public universities and the loan cannot adequately cater for students’ tuition, adding that more than ninety percent of students won’t meet the stringent requirements to access and repay the loan.
