Albania’s Parliament has given the green light to a controversial agreement with Italy, allowing authorities to detain thousands of asylum seekers rescued in international waters while their asylum applications are processed.
The deal entails Albania holding up to 3,000 migrants and refugees at two Italian-operated processing centers near the Albanian port of Shengjin for approximately one month each. It is anticipated that the country could receive up to 36,000 individuals annually under this arrangement.
Human rights groups have condemned the agreement, with the International Rescue Committee labeling it as “dehumanizing,” and Amnesty International describing it as “illegal and unworkable.”
