In response to identified funding gaps and deteriorating healthcare metrics, the National Economic Council, on Thursday, approved plans to revamp over seventeen thousand healthcare centres in the country.
Speaking after the one hundred and thirty-seventh council meeting, Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed revealed insights from the presentation delivered to the council by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Ali Pate, highlighting the critical condition of the health sector and lamenting the stark statistics which showed a decline in health indices, including infant mortality rates.
Bala stated that the Tinubu-led administration aims to establish a synergy among stakeholders for deep and lasting reforms before announcing that seventeen thousand primary health centers, seven hundred and seventy-four hospitals as well as some tertiary institutions will be put on a threshold of viability.
The governor revealed that suggestions were made for sourcing for funds, including taxes from communication, airlines, as well as state governments to bridge the financial gaps plaguing the healthcare system.
While highlighting the critical shortage of healthcare professionals,, he also pointed out the “huge problem of human capital and attrition of experts, and stressed the need of developing strategies to retain local talent.
