State chapters and affiliate unions of the Nigeria Labour Congress are reportedly preparing for a possible declaration of a nationwide strike following the expiration of a twenty-day ultimatum given to the Federal Government to provide palliatives to cushion the pains associated with the recent fuel subsidy removal.
It could be recalled that the organised labour had earlier embarked on a two-day warning strike to press home its demands and gave the government a twenty-day ultimatum to meet its demands after the strike.
Punch reported that with the expiration of the ultimatum on Friday, the NLC has scheduled an emergency meeting of its National Executive Council for Tuesday at noon, which is expected to decide the next line of action.
Meanwhile, the federal government on Saturday evening is reportedly planning to meet with the labour leaders on Monday in an effort to prevent the strike.
“Yes, the government delegation will meet with them maybe on Monday. The idea is to ensure that we prevent the strike. The nation cannot afford a shutdown of its economy at this time,” a government source said.
