Five days before the first round of France’s presidential election, two men have been arrested on suspicion of planning an imminent attack during the presidential elections which open on the twenty-third of April.
The suspects, aged twenty-three and twenty-nine, were detained in Marseille, southern France, by elite police and domestic intelligence agents after a search that had lasted several days.
A flat in the rue de Crimée in Marseille’s central third district was being searched amid reports that guns and material used for making explosives had been found. Neither man is from Marseille. Both men were said to have been radicalized in prison.
France goes to the polls to choose a new president on twenty-third of April, with a second round of voting due on the seventh of May. France has been under a state of emergency, which has been extended several times, in the face of Islamist militant attacks in Paris and other parts of the country in which more than two hundred and thirty people have been killed.
