In commemoration of the World English Language Day which is staged on April 23, Educationists have urged teachers, parents and guidance to speak in English to their children.
While speaking with Royaltimes correspondent, Opeyemi Akeredolu on the importance of children speaking correct English, an educationist, Ayobola Lawrence stated that it helps children to communicate well, and urged parents and teachers to develop themselves alongside their children.
‘‘The essence of speaking good english is to be able to communicate well, to carry listeners along and also drive your point to whoever is listening. It also brings about self development, self confidence. It builds one moral as not speaking well lower child self esteem’’.
“The background of the child and also the quality of education expose to the child, as well as the quality of educaton of the teachers are some of the causes of not speaking well” said Lawrence.
Coach Rachael Idowu, a Diction Coach while explaining the importance of speaking in English to children said children might lack self-confidence if they are unable to speak good English.
“There will have inferiority complex, they will not be able be mingle and relate well even when they have great ideas to communicate, they will find it difficult to do” said Rachael
The purpose of the day is to celebrate multilingualism and cultural diversity as well as to promote equal use of all six official languages.
