As poultry farmers in Nigeria along with their counterparts worldwide,celebrate World Egg Day with a reflection on the many issues that currently characterize the industry , funding and diseases that affects poultry birds have been identified as one of the many factors that affects the production and supply of eggs in Nigeria.
Akinwunmi Richard,chairman Poultry Association of Nigeria ,Kwara state chapter stated this while speaking with newsmen in Ilorin on the sidelines of World Egg Day celebration.
According to him ,many poultry farmers are going through difficulties across Nigeria especially with the new variant of diseases killing poultry birds in large quantities. He noted that the development constitutes a threat to food security.
Akinwumi hinted that “the road show organized in ilorin ,Kwara state capital will go a long way to create increased awareness for health benefits of eggs to residents in kwara state and Nigerians at large”.
Earlier in his remarks, commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development in Kwara state , Gidado Abdullateef who flagged off the road show in his address advised Nigerians to engage in the habit of eating egg for healthy living.
Speaking to journalists on the need to encourage perceptions of eating egg, respondents including Jimoh Abolere and Sikirat Alatishe who are members of the Poultry Association of Nigeria , Kwara state averred that although the situation in the country today has affected the price of all commodities (egg inclusive), they submitted that egg must be consumed to maintain a good health.
The Association climaxed the day with a luncheon/fund raising of 70 million naira for the Association Secretariat complex. Honorary award of excellence were also presented to grand patron of the Association Olofa of Offa Oba Mufutau Gbadamosi Okikiola Esuwoye II; other patrons including the Olupako of Shaare Oba Haruna Olawale Sulaiman, the Olusin of Ijara Isin Oba Ajibola Ademola Julius and other important dignitaries in the poultry value chain.
Every year, on the second Friday of October, World Egg Day is observed, and activities have grown and developed since it was first marked in 1996.
World Egg Day 2022 is celebrated with the theme, ‘Eggs for a Better Life’ to highlight the many benefits eggs bring to human health and livelihood.
