No fewer than 100 volunteers today cleaned up places in Tanke area of Ilorin,Kwara state capital to mark the World Cleanup Day 2021 removing and disposing waste from the environment.
The volunteers who turned up in teams as early as 7 A.M on Saturday converged on the University of Ilorin terminus for their onward movement to Tipper Garage , Awolowo road and the University of Ilorin where volunteers took progressive steps on the journey towards ensuring a waste free future in line with global commitment to preserving the environment.
Chizoba Uche and Ahmed Hamza who are both volunteers for the day in their separate remarks bemoaned that poor waste management not only lead to long term environmental damage but short term effects in Nigeria also include seasonal flooding, spread of diseases, and risks of injury and poisoning due to air, water or soil pollution.
In his remarks ,Adekunle Idowu representing the eleven eleven twelve foundation while lending his voice also lamented that “trash blindness is the single biggest obstacle to creating cleaner communities”.
He concluded that World Cleanup Day is a wake up call for everyone in the whole world urge residents to take charge in their communities.
World Cleanup Day is an annual global social action program aimed at combating the global solid waste problem, including the problem of marine debris
