Women in Politics: Men Admonished to Support Wives, Daughters

Women in Politics: Men Admonished to Support Wives, Daughters

A resource person and Chief Executive Officer of Bello Consult, Mr Sikiru Bello, has admonished men to allow their wives and female wards participate actively in political activities and decision making.

Bello made the charge on Friday while addressing selected men from Ilorin West Local Government area, during a sensitization programme to mainstream men in the women voice and leadership programme.

The sensitization programme was organized by Nuhu Fatimoh foundation with support from Global Affairs Canada and Action Aid.

The Resource person noted that one of the major hindrances women encounter are their parents, husbands, relatives or even opinion leaders who feels women are not suitable for politics because of certain factors.

He highlighted some of the great women who have made giant strides in leadership position and are also successful at home.

He noted that with co-operation, understanding and support, women can combine the home front with leadership responsibilities as they have been tested and found to be capable.

Some of the participants, which include artisans, political, community and religious leaders, described the programme as an eye opener, which has made many realize the need to allow their women participate actively in politics.

Hon. Isiaka Olanrewaju Aremu, said the programme, first of its kind should not be allowed to die, but rather taken to the grassroot for many to get the message.

He lauded the NUFAT foundation for the initiative as well as Global Affairs Canada and ActionAids for their support in ensuring that Nigerian women also mature politically like their counterparts in the developed world.

Chief Imam, Baba Ope Saraki Mosque, Adeta, Ilorin, Saadallah Yakub, said women should sit their husbands down and discuss extensively with them to win their support in their quest to go into politics.

He also advised women to call themselves to order when eventually permitted so that they do not misuse the opportunity.
