VC Mustapha-Akanbi to transform KWASU to financially sustainable institution

The Vice Chancellor of the Kwara State University, KWASU, Professor Muhammed Mustapha Akanbi, has restated his commitment to some of his core mandates, which is to ensure conducive learning environment, enable policy oriented research, double efforts in community development and transform the university to a financially sustainable institution.

Mustapha Akanbi spoke on Monday when he hosted newsmen to a media parley in his office at the university, Malete.

The new VC, who assumed office on the first April, 2020, said as part of plans to raise internally generated revenue, the university will partner with various bodies and institutions to invest in hospitality business, bakery, farming and many others.

According to him, this will help to grow businesses, add value and enhance community development.

The Vice Chancellor, who noted that higher institution of learning must be big players in the agriculture business, said to achieve the feat, he has already inaugurated Kwasu Investment and Consultancy Unit that will work towards ensuring that Kwasu products dominates the market.

He said plans are underway to start investment in hatchery, pop corn seed plantation and many others that are basically imported into the state.

According to him, KWASU has land, expertise, brand and goodwill, all of which are essential to excel in agro allied business and other investments.

Mustapha Akanbi also assured that the institution during his tenure will not increase the school fees, but employ possible ways to rather make it bearable for students.

While noting that every child deserves quality education, the Senior Advocate of Nigeria, said it is difficult to provide free education at tertiary level.

The institutions’ helmsman, who noted that more of such are policy decisions that requires Senate approval, he, however, expressed his preference for school fees to be determined by course requirements.

The VC, who assumed office on April 1, 2020, said there may be need for the government to subsidize financially demanding courses, especially for indigenes of the state.

On preparation for possible resumption, the Vice Chancellor said efforts are in top gear to ensure safety of students anytime the government deems fit.

According to him, in addition to the government guidelines which must be followed to the letter, KWASU is also to embarked on massive production of face masks and sanitizers.

He added that courses being offered by a higher number of undergraduates are now to be taught online to avoid overcrowding.
