United States has announced the imposition of visa restrictions on Nigerians it accused of
trying to undermine democracy at this year’s general elections. Spokesperson for the
Department of State Morgan Ortagus, in a statement on Tuesday said certain individuals were
acting with impunity at the expense of other Nigerians.
The Department of state described the ban as specifically targeted towards certain
individuals and not directed at Nigerians or the newly elected government.
The statement however did not name the individuals or say how many were affected by the
measure because according to a former State Department official the U.S. privacy regulations
prohibit the government from naming the individuals affected by the restrictions.
Morgan added that the decision reflected the Department of State’s commitment to working
with the Nigerian government to realize its expressed commitment to end corruption and
strengthen democracy, accountability, and respect for human rights.
