The University of Ilorin chapter of the Academic staff union of university (ASUU) has joined its counterpart to protest against “No work , no pay ” policy of the current administration as well as the half month salary paid for the month of October. The union said another crisis that will be worse than the first strike will looms.
Addressing news men during the protest that took place within the university of Ilorin premises on Monday, the secretary of Unilorin ASUU Dr. Olatunji Abdulganiyu, who tagged his speech ” CASUALISATION OF INTELLECTUAL WORKERS IN NIGERIA: PRELUDE TO OUR RESPONSE” expressed displeasure with half salaries be paid to ASUU members for the month of October, 2022.
According to the union, academics are not casual workers.
The union said, the minister of labour Chris Ngige’s strategy is to outlaw industrial action as a tool of protest by workers in Nigeria.
The unilorin ASUU said the union would respond by considering to revoke the “No Pay, No work policy by abandoning the works that have accumulated for those periods which government has falsely claimed, through Chris Ngige, that her members have not worked.
The union also called on stakeholders to advise government on the need to pay the lecturers.
Also speaking with newsmen after the protest, former unilorin ASUU chairman, Professor Rasheed Adeoye said lecturers nationwide will not accept the no work, no pay policy of the current administration.
