Presidency asks Former President Obasanjo to explain why he shunned Democracy Day celebration

THE Presidency has said that former President Olusegun Obasanjo needs to explain to Nigerians why he was absent at 2019 Presidential inauguration and Democracy Day.

It would be recalled that some former Nigerian leaders, including Obasanjo, neither attended the May twenty-ninth event where President Muhammadu Buhari took the oath of office nor the June 12 event when the president hosted African leaders. Only Yakubu Gowon attended the May 29 event.

Former President Obasanjo was quoted to have said that he did not receive any invitation for the ceremony. However, Presidential Spokesman, Garba Shehu in a statement on Wednesday said Obasanjo’s claim that he was not invited to the inauguration cannot be sustained because he was duly invited to both programmes but attended none.

He added that the letter inviting Obasanjo to the event was written by the Secretary to the Government, Boss Mustapha on May 19. Shehu said if, in the circumstance, Obasanjo did not see or receive the letter and invitation cards, then the former President needs to find out what is happening with his own secretariat.

He stated that the government office did its job diligently and should not be blemished for no reason.
