The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Governors have rejected proposal for a consensus presidential candidate. The decision was taken at a meeting with PDP Presidential Aspirants in Abuja on Tuesday night.
The governors have also agreed that the party national convention where the presidential candidate would emerge be held in Port Harcourt. There are 12 presidential aspirants jostling for the party’s ticket.
It would be recalled that PDP governors had at an earlier meeting in Abuja on Monday resolved to have an all-inclusive meeting with all the party presidential aspirants. A source at the meeting on Tuesday who spoke on condition of anonymity said that the governors resolved that all the aspirants should go for the primaries in the spirit of fairness and equity.
Meanwhile, the party has announced new dates for House of Assembly, National Assembly and governorship primaries ahead of the 2019 general elections. The PDP has also extended by 7 days, the sale and submission of forms implying that the new deadline will now be next Tuesday.
The party’s National Organising Secretary, retired Colonel Austin Akobundu on Tuesday said the party will pick candidates to vie for States Houses of Assembly seats on the fifteenth of September, while appeals arising from same earlier fixed for Monday, September 17, will now hold on Thursday, October 4, 2018.
He added that the governorship primary was shifted to September 26 with appeals slated for September 28, while the date for presidential primaries remained October 5 and 6.
