Following an attack on officials and players of Sunshine Queens of Akure by suspected fans of Abia Angels of Umuahia, the Ondo State Government on Monday called on the Nigeria Women Premier League to look into the incident and punish the offenders.
Sunshine Queens, who played against Abia Angels in the NWPL in Umuahia on Saturday, were allegedly beaten by officials and fans of the host team after the game ended one-one. Referee Mariam Usman and other match officials were also alleged to have been attacked with planks, irons and stones.
Sunshine’s cameraman was said to have been rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, for treatment. Ondo State Commissioner for Youths and Sports Development, Saka Yusuf-Ogunleye, said the management of the NWPL must act by sanctioning the attackers.
