NBA describes Onnoghen’s trial as an assault on the judiciary

The Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, has said that the trial of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen, is an assault on the Judiciary. According to reports, Onnoghen will be arraigned before the Code of Conduct Tribunal on Monday for reportedly failing to declare his assets and also maintaining several domiciliary bank accounts.

The NBA, in a statement signed by its President, Paul Usoro (SAN), however said that the media trial of the embattled chief justice does not follow the rule of law, hence should be stopped.

The NBA amongst other things decried the speed at which the case is being handled, claiming that all due protocols have been intentionally left unobserved.

The NBA also said that the National Judicial Commission (NJC) was not informed about the charges against Onnoghen. The association called on the Federal Government to stop debasing the rule of law.
