The Lagos State Police Command has arrested nine policemen, one traffic warden and two others for extorting money from motorists. The state Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi, said on Thursday that the arrest was a follow-up to his warning to policemen in the command to guide against corruption and unprofessional conduct.
He said the X-Squad Unit has intensified its activities to ensure zero tolerance for corruption and unruly practices by operatives of the command.
According to him, the policemen, who were arrested between the first and eighteenth of September, 2017 are currently undergoing departmental orderly room trial to ensure a total purging of the command of its bad eggs, while their civilian accomplices are being charged to court.
The police commissioner said he has also directed that the Divisional Police Officers and the Divisional Traffic Officers of the affected divisions be issued queries for lack of supervision and disobedience to lawful orders.
He urged the executive and members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers to warn their members from being used by unscrupulous policemen as tools of extortion.
