President Buhari orders Police Officers: to stop harassing young people with laptops

President Muhammadu Buhari has cautioned officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force against harassing young people in their bid to arrest `yahoo criminals.’ President  Buhari handed down this warning in his keynote address at the opening ceremony of the Conference and Retreat for Senior Police Officers on Monday in Lagos.

Represented by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Mr Buhari said that the service the police force render is one Nigerians cannot do without as it is the closest to the grassroots. President Buhari however said that there is the need to close the trust gap between the police and the citizens, build partnership and strengthen collaboration with communities towards addressing prevalent security threats.

He urged the police not to arrest young men and women just because they look successful and are carrying laptops. President Buhari also cautioned against extra judicial killings, misuse of weapons and excessive use of force by some members of the force.

President Buhari disclosed that special trainings are being organized for the special units of the police while resources have been put into acquiring and deploying electro-muscular disruption technology-based weaponry which is commonly-known as Taser or Stun Guns for low-risk police operations. He also promised to continue to support the leadership of the Nigeria Police in their personnel capacity development programmes at the various Police Training facilities.
