The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kwara State Council has congratulated Muslim members and their counterparts across the Country as they joined other faithfuls around the world to celebrate this year’s Eid–el–Kabir.
The Union, while enjoying them to use the period to promote peace, mutual understanding and unity in the country, called on members to imbibe the lessons of dedication and obedience to higher authority as demonstrated in Prophet Ibrahim’s preparedness to sacrifice his son in obedience to the instructions of Allah.
According to a statement jointly signed by the Chairman and Secretary of the Union, Comrade Umar Abdulwahab and Comrade Omotayo Ayanda, “as members we must continue to exhibit love toward fellow human beings and re-dedicate ourselves to the service of Almighty Allah and humanity.
“You should always uphold the lessons of love, loyalty, spiritual renewal and sacrifice which are the hallmarks of the Idhul-Kabir celebration”.
The Union while noting that the celebration came at a time when Nigeria is in dire need of special prayers for God’s intervention on COVID-19 pandemic and other challenges bedeviling the country, employed members to use the period to pray for God’s mercy, as well as ensure they observe the directives by medical experts on control of spread of COVID-19.
“We wish to, on behalf of the National, Zonal Secretariats and Kwara Council of NUJ greet all our Muslim members’ happy celebration.
“However, as stakeholders in the Nigerian Project, we urged all to keep to all rules as directed by the Federal Government, NCDC, and most especially, the National President of our great Union, Chief Chris Isiguzo while we discharge our duties during and after the celebration.
“There is no doubt that the pandemic has really impacted negatively on the media industry. The impact includes loss of revenue and low sales, pay cut, job loss, suspension and cancellation of print operations and downsizing, among others.
“As part of the effort to cushion the effect of the pandemic on members, the Kwara State NUJ recently constituted welfare committee chaired the Chairman of the State Information Chapel, Alh. Abdulganiyu Atere. The committee has members across the 12 chapels that formed the state council as measure for the improvement of the working and welfare conditions of media practitioners.
“The Council wishes to solicit for more corporation and supports from members to achieve the tasks of redefining the Union’s reputation and take the State NUJ to greater heights.
“We want to assure our members that this administration will continue to introduce people-friendly programmes and explore other avenues that will bail the Union out of its current situation”, the statement added.
