The candidate of the Unity Party of Nigeria, UPN, for the bye-election in Ekiti, Irepodun, Isin, Oke-Ero Federal Constituency, Olaniyan Taiye Ayorinde, has assured the people of his commitment to provide purposeful representation if voted into power.
Speaking with newsmen after the party’s stakeholders’ meeting in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, the Omu-aran born Engineer said his determination to represent his people at the green chamber is to ensure that their voice is represented at the chamber, contrary to the popular custom where lawmakers take decisions on their own without proper consultation to know what the people actually want.
He also noted that there must be a paradigm shift from the political tradition of embracing just major party candidates in a multi-party system.
According to him, the people must start to examine other political parties, analyze their programmes and support their candidates who are adjudged to be upright and competent enough.
In line with his party’s agenda, the UPN candidate said he hopes to use his office to enhance youth employment and empowerment as well as stimulate infrastructural development for his people and beyond.
While urging electorates to come out en masse to vote on Saturday without fear or intimidation, he advised them to shun acts of vote selling as, according to him, such will only amount to a sold future.
He also called on security personnel to be at alert to apprehend those who may want to engage in vote buying or even disrupt the exercise.
Olaniyan, who emphasized the need for the Independent Electoral Commission, INEC, to ensure a level playing field for all contestants and political parties, expressed confidence that the UPN will compete equally with any political party if things are adequately put in place during Saturday’s bye-election and in the 2019 General elections.
